JP 2006 May Hokkaido (Part 1)

My first time driving in Japan.

After landing in New Chitose airport, took train to Obihiro and stayed overnight. Picked up rental car on next morning then drove to Akan-ko. Stayed in Tsuruga onsen ryokan for the first time.

Akan-ko

It was a rainy and cold day, around 11C if my memory was correct even in end May.

Higashi-Mokoto Shibazakura Park (東藻琴芝桜公園)

It was a rainy day with drizzles at times, but the scenery was awesome with the scale of Shibazakura on the hill slope.

Tokachigawa onsen

stayed in this onsen for the first time and would return another 5 times.

JP 2011 June Hokkaido (Part 2)

Yuni Garden

The Yuni Garden is a huge English garden. Various flowers were blooming in late June when we visited. Worthy to spend a few hours there for those who love gardens and flowers.

Shikotsu-ko

Second visit in Shikotsu-ko for relaxing onsen stay.

Toya-ko

Visited and stayed in Toya-ko 4th time.  The sculptures around the lake rim are interesting.

JP 2011 June Hokkaido (Part 1)

Visited Hokkaido in late June for 1 week after the 3.11 Tohoku big earthquake to support Japan.

CTS > Yubari > Tokachigawa onsen > Furano > Toya-ko > Sapporo

Obihiro

After a brief overnight stay in Yubari, drove to Obihiro and stayed in our favourite Tokachigawa onsen with ensuite rotenburo again.

Biei+Furano

Minami-Furano

stopped by serene Kanayama-ko while driving en route to Furano.

Tomita Farm

flowers were blooming such as Iris, Dahlia, Gazania, Poppy and early Lavender indoor flower beds etc.

Senbou-toge, Flowerland

Stopped by Senbou-toge for panoramic view of Tokachi plain, and to our surprise Wisteria (Fuji) was blooming in the resting area. Wild Lupins were blooming here and there on the road side and Flowerland.

Shikisai-no-oka, Biei Patchwork Road

Dropped by Shikisai-no-oka as usual and had quick lunch there. Re-visited some famous trees in that area before visiting the Philosophical Tree. We did not realize this would be our last encounter 🙁

JP 2017 Feb Ski Yuzawa

Returned to Yuzawa onsen town and skied in Kagura, Naeba, Gala+Ishiuchi Maruyama ski resorts. Rented a medium-fat ski on D1+2.

D1 Kagura+Tashiro

With the fatter ski I had better control on bumpy and deep snow. Went up to the expert course @1850m – on top of the Main gelande, for the first time when previously it was closed most of the time.

D2 – Mt Naeba

Big snowstorm grounded the gondola to the upper slopes so all were confined to lower slopes. The fatter skis allowed me to surf on knee-deep snow when previously on normal skis I would have sink in and got stuck.

D3 – Gala+Ishiuchi Maruyama (IM)

Sunny and calmer day at last. Revisited Gala and spent few hours in neighbouring IM, where there are some good moguls at the foothill. Gala itself was not that big and it was quite crowded even on weekday.

Some nice restaurants in the onsen town.

JP 2017 Feb Ume and early Sakura

After my ski trip in Yuzawa, I returned to Tokyo and visited 3 parks famous for Ume (plum) and early Sakura.

Hanegi Park (羽根木公園)

This park is in Setagaya. According to the website, there were more than 600 Ume trees (out of 650) in blossom in the week when I visited.

Kairakuen (偕楽園)

One of the 3 famous gardens in Japan. It is in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, about 75min by express train from Tokyo plus another 20min by local bus. It was huge and I only visited probably one-third of it where the Ume garden was.  Though it was on a weekday, many locals were there to enjoy the Ume Matsuri (festival). Out of the 3000 Ume trees planted, over 1600 were blooming in the week that I visited (as per its website). Spent 3 hrs+ there, would definitely return in the future.

Shinjuku Gyoen

Apart from Ume, there were other flowers such as some early-blooming sakura species, which attracted huge crowds.

Side trip to Shonan

head to Shonan coastline in Kamakura on a sunny day. Had a relaxing Italian lunch there.

JP 2015 April Awaji

First visit to Awaji for Tulips after Hanami in Kyoto. Drove across the 4km Akashi Kaikyo bridge to Awaji.

AKASHI KAIKYO NATIONAL GOVERNMENT PARK (淡路島国営明石海峡公園)

While tulip was the main theme, sakura and other Spring flowers were nicely planted and arranged in the park. We spent around 5 hours, including a brief lunch.
